What's in a name???
Lago Titicaca - Bolivia/Peru
'A placename is often much more than just a label. A name may bespeak the history of a nation, the culture of a people, or the hopes of an individual.'
Di is taking Geography and yesterday she told me the Geography teacher said, as a joke -ofcourse- that the guy who named the Titicaca Lake must have been pooping and watching a naked when he found the lake (titi for breasts... caca for poop). Lol!
Anyway, she was telling me how she wanted to find out where the name came from, as we were sure the name cam from something related to the aborigins living there.
According to the book Placenames of the World: Origins and Meanings
Titicaca Lake may derive the name from the Quechua 'titi' -lead (the metal) and 'kaka' -mountain chain. Some other sources say it derives from an Aymara word that means 'Rock of the jaguar'.
Also, this book says the lake is shaped like an animal: the head would be in Bolivia and the tail in Peru. I didnt see any animal shape in the pictures I looked, but it was ok.
Anyway, the name of the day was Titicaca Lake and the number was 30 -the amount of days left to see my brother :)
sorry....
i watch too much Sesame Street
